CAD Capabilities

SYSTEM EDGE has a large Computer Aided Design group consisting of structural and mechanical engineers, naval architects and marine engineers and software specialists who can offer a full range of Computer Aided Design and Implementation solutions.

Because of the high level of engineering design and implementation expertise that this group possesses, it is ideally positioned to offer outsourced Computer Aided Design services to foreign clients. Apart from AutoCAD, this group also possesses considerable expertise in IBM’s engineering design tool CATIA.

Some of the outsourced CAD activities that this group could support are :

  • Customization of existing design software - customization of a clients existing design software work can be undertaken

  • Detailed designing based on outline engineering designs - detailed stage-wise drawings to meet various purposes could be prepared on the basis of outline designs. For example outline designs of products and structures could be sent across to this group for development of detailed designs and drawings.

  • Implementation of CAD packages - Implementation of CAD packages often requires complex input of engineering data calling for a good degree of basic engineering domain expertise, which this group possesses. Implementation of various CAD packages can be taken up by this group.

  • Scanning and digitization of drawings. This is possibly the simplest and elementary of CAD functions which this group can also support.

Scanning and Digitizing

Conversion of drawings available in paper into vector drawings through process of scanning and conversion of the images into electronic drawings.

SYSTEM EDGE provides accurate Laser Scans of components, parts, and free form surfaces of any shape and size.

This technology is successfully utilized in numerous design and manufacturing areas, such as CNC programming, design/drafting, rapid proto-typing, reverse engineering, and quality control inspection.

Reverse Engineering

SYSTEM EDGE has a core group of very senior engineers in the Engineering Services Group dedicated to engineering consulting and technical support of specialized projects for the CAD Group.

A major area of activity for this group is “Reverse Engineering”.

Because of the need for import substitution as well as to cater to the spares requirements of originally imported equipments where spares from the maker are no longer available there is a steady requirement to produce drawings to enable indigenous manufacture of specialized components.

For a typical reverse engineering order the Engineering Group first assesses the nature of the job to determine the levels of tolerance etc required (depending upon end-use and metallurgical and manufacturing specs) and also whether the customer only needs drawings with the finished dimensions or he needs step-by-step reverse engineering drawings for the entire manufacturing process. The Engineering Group ensures accuracy of dimension data using conventional precision measuring tools (10μM and above) such as Micrometers, Dial Gauges, Standard Gauges etc. If there is a requirement for high levels of measurement precision as in the case of instrument components or machine tool items where tolerance and run-outs have to be restrained to a few microns or in some cases submicron levels, then CMM tools are used.

A fairly wide range of CMM tools are being used through certified high-end Tool Rooms whose services are available at Calcutta. In some of our projects we have used tools from Mitutoyo (Japan) who supports a wide variety of CMM tools. In our recent projects we have also used the CMM facilities offered by a Central Tool Room facility supported by an Indo-Danish initiative. The CMM available at this installation is a Carl Zeiss MC850 with accuracy levels of 0.1 micron.

We also have access to and have been using a suite of Pro/E software supporting Reverse Engineering.

Reverse Engineering projects normally serviced by SYSTEM EDGE are usually of two kinds:

Generation of detailed 2D/3D drawings for components/parts of equipment.

Full reverse engineering of many engineering equipments, involving component drawings as well as manufacturing/process drawings.
